" L'immédiat "

Novel

Editions du Seuil

Born in 1977 in Namur, Marie Delos currently lives in Belgium.

"Anne, a young teacher in Brussels, music lover and amateur musician, decides to leave to live in Seville, where she will teach French a foreign language. Why Seville? Questions her colleagues. "Because it is a bit far", she replies, as if there were no explanation for an act that refers to the essential motivations that only art can capture. Haunted by the music of Prokofiev, notably by the second concerto,in fact the narrator seeks in the geometry of this mysterious city the living trace of her torments and her obsessions. A first novel highly mastered , with a contained violence, a dark lyricism, where the charm of introspection perfectly fits the line of the story." (Introduction by the editor)

"I arrived in Seville with Prokofiev in my mind.First on the bus, to cross the city and then on the sidewalks, bridges and stairs. indeed, there are no stairs in Seville. It is a flat city , flatter than its opaque river. I let myself , I think, be misled by los tacones - there are stairs in the flamenco. Prokofiev is a flat staircase which carried me to Seville. I started to draw gestures when I heard the second concerto:at first triangles with arms , then, very quickly, with legs. Upon reflection, I would say it was right angle triangles, as they are called, paradoxically,in geometry, my elbow ensuring the right angle when I was beating out the rythm. To be truthful, it was not the rhythm it was forms, geometric shapes that my arms hung traced in the yellow air before falling like pendulums at the end of myself. Kleist would have recognized the dancing puppets on a string.

I wish I was a puppeteer. If not, I was a puppet. Subject to the music."

"If La pianiste of Jelinek comes back into memory, it is especially L'inconsolable of Anne Godard (RTL-Lire 2006 prize) that we think. L'immédiate is also true for its evocation of Seville, beautifully described as a combination of lines, a partition. Marie Delos marks the serious unfulfilled passions of her characters. Inevitably subject to the music of composer Alexander Nevsky." (Baptiste Liger, Lire, April 2009)
