Les œuvres de Rune Glerup ont été comparées à des objets autour desquels une personne peut se promener. Ses « objets musicaux » définissent leur propre espace, créent des contextes les uns pour les autres et peuvent se faire passer pour d'autres entités.
Dès sa premiere oeuvre Trio (2000), Glerup a commencé à explorer comment ces objets distincts pouvaient générer des frictions les uns avec les autres. Cette technique est développée dans objets/décalages (2008), dust encapsulated #1 (2008-09) et #2 (2009) et Concerto pour piano et orchestre (2009-10), des œuvres qui, à la fois, exploitent et combattent les dogmes musicaux.
La Symphonie de Glerup (2015-16) est l’œuvre d’une imagination exacerbée, contrôlée par une mécanique précise et fonctionnelle, tandis que Six Mouvements pour trio avec piano (2016-17) prolonge une tradition nordique consistant à explorer en profondeur des idées simples en les soumettant à des structures formelles standardisées.
Rune Glerup a collaboré avec le London Sinfonietta, l'Ensemble Intercontemporain, l'Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, le Danish National Symphony Orchestra, le SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart et la Biennale de Venise.

My violin concerto would never have been written if I had not met Isabelle Faust. At a time when I had not written a single note for several months, doubting if I would ever write anything again, her interest and energy was the cause of new inspiration. Just as important was her special way of playing - with intellect, heart and a rare, delicate sensibility. Her personality and musicianship struck a chord in me, in my music, which gave my thoughts a new direction. The violin concerto marks a change in my music towards a simpler and lighter expression. An expression that also contains detached glimpses from my childhood's endless summers by the North Sea. Birds, high and slow on a blue sky, and the evening quietly descending. The special light, the distant sounds. But also the confusion, repetitions and dead ends of the world. An expression that, more than in my previous music, is "About Light and Lightness."
