Pierre Michon was born in Creuse, where his parents were teachers.

He went to secondary school in Guéret and then studied literature at the University of Clermont-Ferrand. 

His first text, Vies minuscules (Gallimard), for which he won the Prix France Culture in 1984, was published when he was thirty-seven, after several years devoted to literary studies and acting.
