Hugo GÒMEZ-CHAO

Biographie

Hugo Gómez-Chao (A Coruña, 1995) studied composition with Beat Furrer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Kunstuniversität Graz) and with Ramón Lazkano at Musikene (the Basque Country Higher School of Music) in San Sebastián. Alongside his formal studies, he has received tuition and guidance from composers including Toshio Hosokawa, Alberto Posadas, Clemens Gadenstätter, Bernhard Lang, Mark Andre, and Pierluigi Billone, among others.

He was Composer-in-Residence at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome (2022–2023) and Composer-in-Residence of Juventudes Musicales de España (2019). He has also been an artist-in-residence at the REGA Residencies of the Cidade da Cultura in Santiago de Compostela. His awards include First Prize at the Fundación SGAE–CNDM "Xabier Montsalvatge" Young Composers Competition and an Honourable Mention from the Colegio de España in Paris. He is currently Composer-in-Residence of the Federació de Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya and the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation.

His work has been commissioned and premiered with the support of institutions including the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España (OCNE), Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE), AEOS Foundation, Fundación SGAE, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Juventudes Musicales de España, IMPULS Festival, the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Festival Nuova Consonanza Roma, Contrasti Festival (Florence), ENSEMS Festival (Valencia), the Madrid Festival de Arte Sacro, LaPharmaco Dance Company, Cidade da Cultura de Santiago de Compostela, and Fundació Antoni Tàpies, among others. His music has been performed in Italy, Austria, Germany, and France.

His works have been performed by leading ensembles and orchestras including the Arditti Quartet, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España (OCNE), IEMA Ensemble Modern, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE), Real Filharmonía de Galicia, MDI Ensemble, Arxis Ensemble, Vertixe Sonora Ensemble, Grupo Instrumental Siglo XX, Youth Orchestra of the Generalitat Valenciana, the National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia (JONC), and Ensemble Sonido Extremo.

Since 2018, he has served as Artistic Director of the RESIS International Festival of Contemporary Music in A Coruña, as well as of the AÏS Cultural Association, where he directs projects such as the A_NEXOS concert series at the Luis Seoane Foundation. In 2022, he founded Arxis Ensemble, of which he is also Artistic Director. Since 2023, he has served as curator of the Andrés Gaos Prize and as music advisor to the Department of Culture of the Provincial Council of A Coruña.He is currently working on a new piece for Ensemble Ascolta, which will premiere in 2027.
