Born in 1965 in San Diego, Jay Schwartz studied piano and composition at the University of Arizona where he graduated in 1989. He obtained a grant to pursue his doctorate in musicology at the University of Tübingen.
From 1992 to 1995 he was residing composer at the Staatstheater in Stuttgart. Jay Schwartz composed a lot of music for the stage, ballet (dance / drama) and film musics. Moreover, the biggest festivals of contemporary music commissioned him: Donaueschingen Festival, Venice Biennale, NYYD Estonia...
Among his recent works, we can cite Music for orchestra (2005) for string orchestra and Music for orchestra 2 (2007) for orchestra, Music for 6 voices (2006) for mixed choir or soloists, Echo & Narcissus (2003-2007), chamber opera for contre-tenor, viola and percussion, Music for 8 Autosonic Gongs, Music for Flute and Music for 8 Double Basses (2007).
